Invest in your child's future.

With the last GCSE exam set for Friday 21 June, schools have already turned their attention to the year 10 students' mock exams. This never-ending cycle of tests and assessments is a nerve-wracking time for children and parents. Fourteen and fifteen year olds are already feeling anxious about what, and how to revise and this will continue until the end of June 2025. Teachers may tell students not to worry about exams, and that mocks are an opportunity to find out what the children know, and how they can plug the learning gap. Yet, the reality for children is very different. Our education system ensures that 1/3 of all students fail to gain a standard pass at grade 4 or above in their GCSEs.

Due to the demands of the school curriculum, very little time is spent on metacognition and on ensuring students know the most effective learning and revision strategies. Don't be surprised if you suddenly discover that your child doesn't know what to revise, how to make an effective revision timetable or how to organise their notes. Let's face it, most of the time they only tell us what they did with their friends and what they had for lunch. Even if children attend school every day, they are only there 190 days a year. Hence why the most effective and successful learners understand the art of independent study and their parents know what strategies they can use to help.

It's never too soon to adopt the habits of an effective learner. Students starting in year 7 are more motivated and confident if they have the core skills embedded. At FlourishEd. I provide educational coaching for students and parents to ensure children are exam-ready. With thirty years of school leadership experience, I deliver the advice and guidance parents and children need to reach their full potential - whatever that may be.
